Hello December. We’ve already torn open the first doors of our advent calendars, and there are even more daily treats in store in London thanks to the city’s epic cultural calendar. Now Christmas is just days away, you’ll be hard-pressed to avoid the jollities, so you might as well get stuck in. If you want a full-festive hit head to Covent Garden for the big switch-on of its LED-festooned display featuring an 18-metre tall fir tree, a Victorian Santa’s sleigh and 40 gigantic bells. Or, if you fancy something slightly less red and green, hit up the Yokimono Japanese Christmas market to pick up chic gifts or join film buffs Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo to analyse the best Christmas films ever made.
Still doing your best to block out all the tinsel? There’s lots more on offer without the danger of hearing a Michael Bublé cover of Jingle Bells. Head to the National Theatre to see Max Webster’s fabulously camp production of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest starring current Dr Who, Ncuti Gatwa (it’s sold out, but you can still queue for standing tickets and bag a seat in the Friday Rush), see Jeff Wall’s thought-provoking photographs of highly stylised fictional scenes at the White Cube, or watch newly released Gallic cinematic treats at the French Film Festival. Consider London your cultural advent calendar and fill up your diary with daily titbits.
